Autopsy of Contemporary Art on Conservator’s Table

Artist Anu Põder made the textile sculpture Light and Stuffed in 1992. The museum got the piece in a very bad condition. The sculpture had been kept in a damp room for years and so its textile was mildewed and partly mouldered and its metal frame rusted. The aim of conservation was to remove the extensive mildew. On one leg of the sculpture the damaged textile had to be totally removed and substituted with new material. When restoring modern contemporary art it is possible to use the same or very similar materials that the author used originally. The piece of art will be displayed at the artist’s memorial exhibition titled Fragility is Courage in the Kumu Art Museum in the spring of 2017.
